Crikey

Today we lost a great entertainer, Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter. He was doing what he does best and filming for his series “Ocean’s Deadliest”. He was filming stingrays when he swam too close and was pierced threw the heart by its poisoned barb.

Stingrays have a serrated, poison-loaded barb, or spine, on the top of their tail to use as their defense system. Experts say it is unusual for stingrays to actually attack humans and to cause a fatal blow is extremely unusual. For Irwin to have been hit and to have been killed by a stingray is completely unfortunate.

The stingray stuck Irwin right below his check cavity and the barb made its way through his heart. Once on board his boat, his team rushed to get him to the closest hospital, but when the helicopter arrived to take him to the ER, he was pronounced dead.

I know I am going to miss this Aussie because of his dedication and in-depth presentations he would show us of all the interesting animals and reptiles we share the Earth with. His enthusiasm and energy would captivate the audience while educating at the same time. He opened a world of mystery and fright to the world and showed us that not all creatures are deadly and should be treated with malice.

Irwin was 44 and leaves behind his wife, Terri, his 8 year old daughter, Bindi Sue, and his soon to be 3 year old son, Bob.

Peace,
DeMo
